Is it possible to build a bicycle made from wood?

Dominator Asked: Is it possible to build a bicycle made from wood?

I am a student in a senior high-school woodworking class and I am very determined to make my final wood shop project to be a bicycle, made of wood.I have one semester (roughly 5 months) to build this project and I want to know if it is even possible to do.All design will be done be me personally, however I need help as to ideas to construct a pedaling mechanism without using a metal chain.I want it to be 100% out of wood (if possible). Also I need wooden wheel ideas and a way to use back brakes (Without the "Fred Flinstone" way).Any help is extremely appreciated

Schwinn makes a bike out of flax fiber. It promises to be as strong and flexible as carbon fiber, and much more environmentally friendly.

Look at the Renovo web site http://www.renovobikes.com/ to see some gorgeous bike frames made from wood. I've seen one in person and it was pure artistry. These bikes use ordinary components for the drive train, though.

wood wheels are what bikes started with
for good reason, they moved on
but it can be done

they had no gears or chain though
drive was direct like a tricycle, still metal not wood

you could drive the front wheel directly from wood cranks and pedals
top speed would be about 7mph though

you could make wood gears and chain but there are hundreds of parts in a chain

what about rope and pulleys?

anyway
it;s not really possible to buidl anytthing practical
it would wear out too soon and be too much hand labor to build [ too $$$$ to sell]

what about tires?

people make bamboo bikes now
of course that is just the frame

and there is a company renovo that makes wood #####$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ bikes
just the frames i think

brakes are going to be tough without rubber
wood just doesn;t have much friction

maybe make it a 'fixie', that would aid in braking some
though the cranks then have to be stronger, and attach to the shoes

bearing also are tough
wood isn;t really very strong for very compressed loads that also have to be low friction
but it would last a few miles

Google "bamboo bicycle".It's done all the time.No chain?Don't see a way of getting around that. You're still going to need a certain amount of metal parts in any bicycle.

Yes. You have already found out about ALL wood bikes, Natural fiber and epoxy frames, and of course the bamboo bike. The question is how functional you want the bike to be. As a piece of art, an all wood bike would be pretty cool. BUT, as a rider, it would not function competitively with its commercial counter parts. If you want a functional wood bike, like the bamboo bike… you will need to merge wood with traditional components.

Yes, wood has ben used in bike frames for decades. In fact, there are still automobile frames made from wood! I drove and raced a Lotus Super 7 which was an all wood frame. It was very strong and light! I could carry the frame hanging over a shoulder like a computer case.!

One of my fond dreams is finding (or even founding) a membership workshop like that offered at my first college or the craft center in the Army. It is a question of organization and liability and they seem to be few and far between, although there is a lapidary group that comes close here in Dallas.
I would suggest looking up Craft Guilds and woodworking classes and see if the people that offer them have an ongoing operation that lets you do work.

Tools needed for a motorcycle kit?

Michael Asked: Tools needed for a motorcycle kit?

So I'm interested in buying a motorcycle kit since everyone says they come with everything you need to put them together. I'm kinda hesitant to get one since I don't really have any metalworking tools. I've never done any welding or anything like that. Just woodworking. Do I need to have welding tools or anything if I buy the kit to put it together?

Answers:

Adam Stein Answered:
just buy a good set of open end and box wrenches, with a socket set. and a set of tire irons. also there is a nifty little gadget to lube cables without taking the sheath off.[cable luber] along with those tire irons a 55 gallon drum with inner tube around the open edge. [tire changing station.] Motion Pro makes a carb synchronizer that You could get. Pretty much the same as a car with some specialty tools added.

Candid Chris Answered:
Different bikes require different size tools so you'll need to figure out the sizes most needed for your bike for any carry-along tool kit. Keep it as simple as possible, e.g- a combo 8 &10mm, a combo 12 & 14mm … etc. Pliers and a multi- Phillips-tipped screwdriver.
Forget any welding sh!t, you pay a pro to take care of any of those jobs!
For more in-depth work on the bike you buy the tools needed as need be.

Question about woodworking?

Sofisticated Asked: Question about woodworking?

I'm 15 and I'm looking for a hobby/job to keep me occupied. I tried numerous hobbies in the past, but none were right for me. So yesterday I got this idea: what about woodworking? I'm pretty creative, I just don't know how to express since I'm not good at drawing/painting, so maybe woodworking would be a good escape for me? What do you think? I haven't tried it before so I don't know. What would I need to get started?

Answers:

Mr Orange Kitty Answered:
If you live in an apartment I would say no. If you live in a house and can get a small corner of the garage you could some small projects. Woodworking as a whole requires a lot of space and large power tools, such as table saws, drill presses, band saws, et cetera. If you limit yourself to small projects with finished lumber you get can by with hand tools. A fair bit of money will be needed as well.

There are a lot of neat things you can do with a dremel or a scroll saw.

Building paper models can also be a lot of fun, and it will save you a lot of money over wood.

What is the name of the toy woodworking set from around 1993-1995 for kids?

Mike Asked: What is the name of the toy woodworking set from around 1993-1995 for kids?

I remember getting this for Christmas as a kid, possibly in 1994. I remember that one of the selling points for the kit was that it would cut wood but not skin.It had working saws and other tools.I've recently stumbled on some websites that stirred up some old memories, so if anyone knows the name of that set, I would certainly appreciate it. Thanks.

WHAT TYPE OF SAW SHOULDI USE TO CUT WOOD FOR DOLLHOUSE?

NUBIAN QUEEN Asked: WHAT TYPE OF SAW SHOULDI USE TO CUT WOOD FOR DOLLHOUSE?

I want to make cabinets for my daughter for her kitchen and I need tips and pointers on the best type of wood to use and what type of inexpensive saw I could get to cut just some basic rectangular shapes. Also if you all know of any basic woodworking websites, books or Dvd/Cd''s please do tell!I really appreciate all the help inadvance.

Answers:

Johnny Apleturd Answered:
The best advise I could give you is to buy something pre cut and assemble it yourself. Cutting out cabinets is not easy, and if you have no experience you may really hurt yourself badly. They should be cut on a table saw.Is this for a dollhouse, or a kitchen ? For a dollhouse maybe even a very good utility knife and a ruler.

Danny B Answered:
You're going to be making LOTS of cuts, so try to find a used powersaw — either a jigsaw or circular saw.

Jim W Answered:
For wood working sites use your search in Dogpile or Google. For cabinets for a dol house, use cardboard or thin balsa wood. Both can be cut with anXacto knife or a box knife.

Where can i buy rustic cherry lumber?

Danny Lee Asked: Where can i buy rustic cherry lumber?

I have no knowledge of woodworking or d.I.y. wood projects but I want to make a magnetic knife rack and while researching it I found out that I need cherry hardwood or lumber. I would prefer rustic cherry because i figure it would look nicer than a plain block of wood would look. Do they sell this kind of wood at lowes or home depot? Can I just buy a 24" long slab of it at the hardware store or do they make you buy a whole long piece of wood?

Answers:

Jeff D Answered:
I'm not sure what you mean by "rustic cherry" (vs. "cherry"), but most home stores have a limited selection of hardwoods. If by "slab" you mean 1" finished stock (3/4" actual), then they might have a few pieces. For anything exotic, long, thick or in quantity you'll have to go somewhere that specializes in hardwoods (usually a local lumberyard or sawmill). For a smallish, single piece (where shipping charges won't be excessive) you might even look online (woodworkerssource.com for example).

XTX Answered:
=== look in your area for a specialty lumber and hardware store== you might be able to find mahogany or oak that can be stained to cherry=== you might also look in the Lowe's etc. for a shelf wood that you can use that is already stained aand you add the magnetics

SieglindeDieNibelunge Answered:
Try this site:

they sell wood (including salvaged antique wood) to DIY people for various projects. You could also do better at a lumber yard than at a Home Depot (not sure about Lowe's). Their wood types are limited and usually the sizes and quality are too.

Wiring to a work shop?

Dwayne Asked: Wiring to a work shop?

What size wire do I need for service to a workshop. I will need to go through attic and under ground. Total about 130 ft.. I will need to run a 30 amp Rv traveltrailer and small woodworking tools; table, mitre saw, small a/c, light, etc.Thank you

Answers:

Aaron A Answered:
Just add a new 100 amp panel to support the garage this would require 2Gauge wire/Stranded Aluminum

TrekkerScout Answered:
For a basic workshop, I usually recommend a 60 amp sub panel.#6 copper or #4 aluminum is usually adequate (if you use TW or UF conductors you would need to increase the wire size by one standard size). While the size would be more than adequate for your current anticipated use, you would have plenty of reserve for possible expansion in the future without worrying about overloading the system.

Kenneth Answered:
I assume you are using 230 volt Single Phase ??…If so.. No. 6 would probqably be ok as long as everything doesn't try to start at once…But No. 4Would be better…
