Undecided Question: In woodworking, why is there such an obsession with hand planes?

MaxSeven Asked: Undecided Question: In woodworking, why is there such an obsession with hand planes?

Of all hand tools, I have noticed that there is an inordinate amount of interest in hand planes. Websites exist that are entirely devoted to hand planes, including the collecting of them, making your own, reviews, etc. There are plane makers that create planes costing thousands of dollars. Wood hobbyists are always talking about planes. So what gives? What is so special about a hand plane? Why not a hand saw, hammer, chisel or drill?

The hand plane is one of the definitive woodworking tools. If you ever see a video or picture of an old style craftsman or carpenter, he's probably holding a plane.

It's also a versatile tool that can be used for a number of different applications. It's also stayed fairly steady in it's design since it was first conceived a few thousand years ago.Using the hand plane is one of the first steps in the process of turning rough lumber into a finished project, so it has an emotional element to it as well. It's like the first step to really creating something.

Short answer, it's like a blacksmith might treat a hammer. The hand plane has become more than justtool to woodworkers, it's become a symbol.
